For the last few months, news of the spread of coronavirus has increased. What started in China has now spread to most countries in the world, and with little information about the virus, each country has reacted differently.
In spite of the spread of this disease to the US, our mission has not changed and our work has not stopped. We will continue to provide pregnancy testing and ultrasound services to women facing unplanned pregnancies in our community. Your needs still exist, so we will continue to meet those needs!
Following CDC recommendations, we are cleaning our mobile unit with strict regularity, disinfecting all surfaces and upping our already-thorough cleaning to happen more frequently.
Background on Coronavirus
Though the term may be new to many people, “coronaviruses” are common and cause a variety of colds and flus. The one we’re hearing about now is called a “novel” coronavirus because it’s a new type that has never been seen in humans before. It’s similar in this way to the beta coronavirus that caused MERS and SARS.
Researchers are still learning how this virus is spread. It seems the most common way is via close contact with people who are infected through airborne droplets. It can also be spread through inanimate objects like doorknobs and other surfaces to the face, and through community, which is why the CDC and other health organizations are advising against large group gatherings.
Symptoms of Coronavirus
- Fever (over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Shortness of breath
The incubation period seems to be anywhere from 2-14 days after exposure.
How Does Coronavirus Affect Pregnant Women?
Right now, there isn’t any data on how coronavirus affects pregnant women. Because pregnancy causes women to be relatively immunocompromised compared to non-pregnant people, it may make pregnant women more susceptible to infections, including flu viruses.
